Timeless Is the New Trendy

Is it just me, or does the whole "X is the New Y!" mindset inevitably lead down a path of perpetual trend-chasing and keeping-up-with-the-Jonesesism?

I think most people are on that path already, this phrase just gives them a convenient way to express it.
